AkvaBar

Favourite Sparkling Wine

1st Place:  Lallier Grand Cru 2008

A great value Vintage Champagne full of toasty brioche and honeyed flavours. Perfect for toasting Christmas Day.

Joint 2nd Place:  Lunetta Prosecco Spumante NV

A great, easy drinking bubbly with clean flavours of apple and pear. Not too sweet, not too dry… perfect.

Joint 2nd Place: Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve NV

Those who consider themselves Champagne lovers, love this wine. A perfect all round Champagne with crisp citrus and pastry notes.

Joint 3rd Place: Pol Roger Pure

Champagne in its purest form with no sweetening dosage.  Dry as you like, this is a perfect Christmas Day aperitif or accompaniment to your festive dinner.

Joint 3rd Place: Seppelt Salinger 2008

One of our favourite sparkling wines as well as yours, this Australian bubbly acts like a true Champagne in every way but the price.

Favourite White Wine

1st Place:  Michel & Stephane Ogier Viognier de Rosine 2014

A brilliant rich and comforting Viognier from the Northern Rhone. This would be the perfect white to pair with your Christmas Turkey.

Joint 2nd Place:  Chateau Doisy-Daene Sec 2013

One of the finest and most unusual whites from Bordeaux, this bone-dry Sauternes is a firm staff favourite and is an ideal gift for any wine lover.

Joint 2nd Place:  Turckheim Grand Cru Brand Gewurztraminer 2011

No surprises this was a hit at the fair, it’s rich, ridiculously aromatic and has a touch of sweetness.

Joint 3rd Place: Gaia Wild Ferment Santorini 2014

Not a wine that you might instantly pick of the shelves but once tasted there is no turning back.  Its razor sharp acidity and minerality makes this wine stand out in the crowd.

Joint 3rd Place: Hamilton Russell Chardonnay 2014

No real surprise this did well, it’s considered one of South Africa’s top Chardonnays and a perfect wine to pair with rich Christmas fayre.

SanmarzanoTable

Favourite Red Wine

1st Place: San Marzano 62 Anniversario Primitivo Riserva 2011 Magnum 150cl

The 2nd year in a row this it has won this category and it’s no wonder. Big, bold, rich & spicy, this is real crowd pleaser and will be perfect with a rich Christmas dinner.

Joint 2nd Place Domaine Lafond Roc-Epine Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2011

Red fruits, cinnamon, cherries, vanilla and pepper. Could this wine be any more Christmassy? A quality, warming red wine for this time of year.

Joint 2nd Place: Renacer Enamore 2013

Made the style of Italy’s Amarone wines, this Argentinean Malbec blend is rich yet incredibly smooth.  In Italy they drink this kind of wine after dinner in the same way we would a digestife.

3rd Place: Jean Bousquet Gaia 2013

Another Argentinean red on the leader board.  Brilliant ripe red fruit with some earthy, spicy undertones. (Be careful on Christmas day, this is 15.5% alcohol!)

Favourite Fortified/Dessert Wine

1st Place: Fernando De Castilla PX Often described as Christmas Pudding in a glass, this sticky sweet sherry is always a favourite this time of year with its figgy and luscious sweet fruit flavours.

2nd Place: Chateau Petit Vedrines Sauternes 2001 A classic quality dessert wine from a top producer. This sticky white wine has a good bit of age behind it giving it deep, complex flavour perfect to go with you after dinner cheeses or even rich paté starters.

3rd: Place Krohn Vintage 2003 Vintage port needs a good 10 years ageing before thinking about serving so this wine is coming into it prime this Christmas. Perfect with your cheeseboard or figgy pudding.

Surprise

1st Place: JiJiJi Malbec Pinot Noir 2014 75cl Not only was this a surprise for you it was a surprise for us when we first tasted it earlier this year. A Malbec – Pinot Noir Blend (weird) made in a Beaujolais style. Brilliant!

2nd Place: Hansen Cabernet Gernischt 2012 Our first and, at the moment, only wine from China. Cabernet Gernischt is the same grape as Camenere and exudes varietal character.

3rd Place: OVNI PX DO Montilla 2011 Usually when you see PX (Pedro Ximenez) on a label you expect a rich sticky sherry but not here. This is a bone dry white from Montilla Moriles, north of Malaga.

Drinkmonger Spirits Stand

Spirits/Liqueurs

1st Place: Edinburgh Gin Rhubarb One of our most popular products, particularly at Christmas, the Edinburgh Gin Rhubarb Liqueur is their fine gin infused with rhubarb, ginger and lemon. Great in cocktails, neat or with sparkling wine.

2nd Place: Dark Matter Rum A big spicy peppercorn & ginger infused Scottish spiced rum. We love its intensity of flavour and complexity.

3rd Place: Glendronach Peated Glendronach distillery produce excellent, full flavoured single malt whisky. This is their first peaty edition, and we have to say it is going down very well. When tasting it, you still get the malty notes, fruit and sherry that is their house style, but with a nice dash of peat.

And finally, the big one
