Drinkmonger Christmas Fair

DrinkmongerChristmassmallLast Sunday (23/11/14) we held our first Drinkmonger Christmas Fair at the Edinburgh City Chambers. It was a great event, where we showcased a selection of wines, beers, spirits, liqueurs and more. We asked our many happy customers to vote for their favourites on the day and here are the top 3 from the various categories:

Favourite Sparkling Wine

1st Place Charles Heidsick Brut Reserve (£38.95 here): Full, fruity, complex with good age.

2nd Place  Cascabel Compose Sparkling Shiraz 1998 (£23.25 here): A brilliant sparkling red that has been 12 years on its lees.

3rd Place Pol Roger Rich (£36.95 here): A demi-sec Champagne created with wedding cake in mind.DrinkmongerCityChambers

Favourite White Wine

1st Place AA Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2013 (£10.95 here): Don’t over chill, and let this complex wine show itself.

Joint 2nd Place Greywacke Wild Sauvignon (£23.50 here): An innovative take on this classic grape, with wild yeast, and a fair bit of ageing on lees, which creates an intricate, fruity wine with nice mineral notes.

Joint 2nd Place Gaia Wild Ferment Santorini (£16.50 here): Made on the windswept island of Santorini, with the aromatic Assyrtiko grape variety.

Joint 2nd Place Seresin Gewurztraminer (£18.95 here): Perfumed & off dry, with extra rich notes from French oak.

Joint 2nd Place Trimbach Pinot Gris (£18.95 here): Long, slow ripening gives this Pinot Gris a richness and texture unlike most Pinot Grigios Italy has to offer. Orange, grapefruit and honey notes.

Favourite Red Wine

1st Place San Marzano 62 Anniversaro Primitivo Riserva 2010 (£25.50 here): A full bodied, chocolaty and rich red wine.

2nd Place Sachia Perricone Caruso Minini 2012 (£8.50 here): Summer fruits, black pepper. It’s a light fresh red.

Joint 3rd Place Catena Malbec 2012 (£13.50 here): Aged for 14 months in a mixture of French and American oak, this is a full, well structured red.

Joint 3rd Place Weingut Sepp Moser Zweigelt 2013 (£8.95 here): With a silky texture, and notes of Morello cherry, this is a great value red for drinking with or without food.

Joint 3rd Place Franck Massard Humilitat Priorat 2011 (£17.50 here): The aim of this wine when it was created was to be fresh and full of berries. They have achieved that, with this cracking wine.

Joint 3rd Place Kozlovic Teran 2012 (£12.95 here): Made from Croatia’s native Teran grape, it is full of cherry and liquorice flavours. A surprising hit.

Joint 3rd Place Domaine Yann Chave Crozes Hermitage Les Saviaux 2012 (£18.50 here): An organic Syrah from the northern Rhone. Notes of blueberry, blackberry and a hint of smoke.

Favourite Beer/Cider

Joint 1st Place Idun’s Elderflower (£2.95 here): Sweet fruity notes and elderflower notes in this small batch, Swedish cider.

Drink of the Fair 2014: San Marzano 62 Anniversaro Primitivo Riserva 2010

This was a sure fire favourite at the Drinkmonger Christmas Fair on Sunday and it seems our guests have impeccable taste in red wine. This Primitivo from Puglia, the heel of Italy, is a big, rich, spicy and warming red with surprisingly soft and smooth tannins, making it a beautiful wine to drink at this time of year. This wine comes in one of the chunkiest, heaviest bottles we have come across, making it a great gift.

Big thanks to all of the suppliers who took part, and for all your votes. If you are looking for any future tastings, check here for our upcoming events.
