Mackmyra Tasting at Royal Mile Whiskies

Our sister shop Royal Mile Whiskies has a longstanding affinity to Mackmyra, as they were the first retailer to sell their single malt in the world at Whisky Live in 2006 (a few days before they were listed on the Swedish Government’s alcohol retailer list). So it was fitting that their brilliant Master Blender Angela D’Orazio hosted an evening for us there, and we were lucky to snag a ticket.

MackmyraTastingIn 1998, a group of friends asked the question “why wasn’t there a whisky distillery in Sweden?” It’s a very good question, and although it seems obvious now, back then many thought there was something special about places like America, Ireland, and Scotland that made their spirits great. We know now it is experience, skill, and good materials that are more important than place. After a year of working on ideas, the first drops of the Mackmyra experiment were distilled in 1999. In 2002, after many experiments the distillery was working full time and the public were offered the chance to buy 30 litre casks of new spirit. Over the next few years, they opened warehouses all over Sweden (in mines, on islands, near castles) to store and mature their precious malt. In 2006, their first single malt was released.  In 2011 they opened their Gravity distillery, utilising gravity in many of the processes to become more energy efficient. In 2012 they won the IWSC European Distiller Of The Year, and in 2013 they released their first smoky whisky.MackmyraDistillery

So, now we are up to date with Mackmyra, on to the tasting. It was a fantastic evening, Angela took us through several expressions, highlighting the different casks they use, the style of whisky they create, and the peat they use. There was particular emphasis on the oak barrels they used.

Here are a few key production points:

  • Swedish Oak (which is quite spicy) and juniper-infused Swedish peat are used in the process, adding a unique sense of place to the whisky, as well as complex flavours.
  • Mackmyra have experimented with many cask types including Bourbon, Sherry, Swedish wine, Bordeaux wine, and Tokaji, to create varied styles.
  • Their spirit is matured in a mixture of different sized casks, with the smaller casks giving the spirit lots of oak flavour at a younger age.
