Bastardo Duriense 2016 75cl
Single varietal wines from Portugal are scarce. Widely planted a century ago, Bastardo grapes are now perhaps even scarcer. The acrimoniously-named fruit could have earned its title any number of ways; it's temperamental, early-ripening and prone to low yields. Folklore reveals its tendency to impoverish the growers that plant it. Despite its capricious nature, well-made examples have a compelling Pinot Noir-like quality offering flavours of pomegranate and red berry fruit. Conceito's Bastardo is convincing enough to have gained quite a following, but we especially like the crater-eyed creep on the label.
