An innovator in the Rioja wine world, Luis Canas was the first winemaker to break with tradition and bottle his own wine in Rioja Alavesa in 1970, rather than selling it as bulk wine. Sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria mountains, Luis Canas has small, very old plots on chalky-clay soil. Predominantly Tempranillo, with a dash of Garnacha, aged for 12 months in French and American oak, with velvety cherry, spice, plum and rounded tannins.
