In 1970, Luis Canas broke wine tradition and became the first winemaker Rioja Alavesa to bottle his own wine, rather than sell as bulk. Now he has 870 small plots of old vines, spread across 350 hectares of chalky, clay soil, sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria mountains. The reserva is composed of Tempranillo with a splash of Graciano. Long skin maceration, giving concentration and complexity. Finally, 18 months in French and American oak, which adds volume and polish.
