Don't let the name deceive you, the original Budweiser Budvar couldn't be further removed from its insipid American imitator.

The brewery, in the South Bohemian town of České Budějovice, was established in 1895 and has been owned by the Czech state since 1967, with the aim of preserving and maintain the centuries-old Czech brewing tradition.

In a modern world of industrially manufactured lagers, made with malt extract syrups and pre-isomerised alpha acid derivatives, Budvar has refused to take any shortcuts in brewing their beer. The beer is brewed with quality Moravian malted barley and whole-cone Saaz hops, fermented by their meticulously propagated house yeast, then cold-conditioned (or Lagered) in the brewery cellars for a minimum of 90 days.
