Champagne Cazé-Thibau Les Leriens Extra Brut 2017

Exceptionally ripe and layered with bright tropical fruit, salted honey, toasted nuts and a silky minerality on the finish.

10th generation grower, Fabien Cazé, makes artisanal Champagnes from 2.66 ha of his family's vines in the villages of Châtillon-sur-Marne and Vandières in the Marne Valley. These vineyards are organically farmed and meticulously tended by hand, and no herbicides or pesticides are used at any point.

This Extra Brut consists of 45% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Meunier and 10% Pinot Noir, all harvested from Châtillon-sur-Marne in 2017. The vines were planted in 1969 and sit in clay-limestone and chalk soils on southeast facing slopes.

The grapes are pressed and the juice is barrel-fermented in naturally temperature-controlled cellars by indigenous yeasts, with some partial, and spontaneous, malolactic fermentation. After assemblage, the blend was bottled for secondary fermentation in July 2018, then disgorged in March 2022 and topped up with a 2.2g/L dosage.

Official Tasting Notes
Gushing nose with plenty of richness and this underlying complexity and salinity. The first sip is surprisingly delicate and then this brilliance of fruit, almost chewy, alongside a sweet exotic element and that salinity again. Gosh this is good; so rich with this incredible complex nutty element which creates this added dimension that only a few producers are able to achieve. The carry through of sweet, toffee'd fruit is so delicious with chunks of sweet pineapple and a touch of salt.
