What? A spirit flavoured with botanicals, with the lead flavouring from the juniper berry. Production methods vary, as do the botanicals used.
Where? Belgium and Holland initially, then the English were for a long time the world's dominant gin producers, but a 21st Century gin explosion has seen distilleries spring up everywhere.
When? Its precursor Jenever was drunk in Belgium and Holland in the 16th century, and we cannot prove who invented it or when.
How? With tonic of course, preferably Fever Tree (its worth it), and experiment without lemon. Gin Fizz, Tom Collins and the Martini are basic cockatils without too many ingredients.
Tip For Beginners: Lots of gin brands are simply contracted distilled at a few large distilleries. Look for the companies who have their own small stills and fully control the process.
