Miyagikyo distillery and Yoichi distillery were founded by Masataka Taketsuru, one of the real pioneers of Japanese whisky. In 1918 he came to Scotland, first to study Chemistry at Glasgow University, and then to study whisky making with some of the most established malt distillers of the time. He came back to Japan with a great knowledge of making whisky. He established the Yoichi distillery first, along with his Nikka blended whisky. He established the Miyagikyo distillery later, in the late 1960's. For Miyagikyo, he wanted a malt whisky that was more fruit driven, and almost like a classic sherried Speyside malt in character, but with his own stamp.
