The monks of Mount Saint Bernard Abbey in Charnwood Forest have always farmed as an activity for the monks, and for income for the upkeep for the Abbey and its charitable work. When farming stopped being a feasible option, they wanted an activity that referred to their history, was financially viable and that they could all be involved in. Brewing was hit upon as the best new venture. From the actual brewing, to bottling, to design of the labels, all done in house. This is the UK’s first Trappist Ale. With assistance in the form of knowledge and advice from the Trappist breweries in Belgium, they have created this rich, mahogany coloured ale. There are records of a beer being brewed in the 19th century in the monastery and it is great to see that revived.
