Rich and generous, yet taut and sharp, with punchy notes of sour red cherry, aromatic herbs and a long savoury complexity with leather, tobacco and a hint of anise - A serious wine that requires some serious accompaniment. Mature, mellowed cheeses, rich red meats and decadent truffle-seasoned dishes will pair like a dream.

The Allegrini family have been growing grapes in Valpolicella, Veneto, for centuries, though it was only in around 1970 that Giovanni Allegrini started making wine himself, later leaving the management of the winery to his children, Walter, Marilisa and Franco, upon Giovani's death in 1983. The 2015 vintage was produced by Franco Allegrini.

La Poja is Allegrini's flagship wine though, unusually for such a venerable winery, it does not bear a DOCG classification, despite the vineyard's location in Valpolicella Classico. Such a classification would require the assemblage to include a minimum of 5% Rondinella which is absent from this single-vineyard, 100% Corvina wine. Instead, La Poja is considered the original, and the finest, 'Super Veronese'.

Also unusual for the appelation is the lack of any appassimento or ripasso treatment to concentrate the flavour of the harvested grapes. The La Poja vineyard was planted and cultivated with the aim of maximising the concentration of sugar and flavour by purely viticultural means.

The vineyard is located at the highest point of the La Grola vineyards, 320 m above sea level, in the comune of Sant'Abrogio di Valpolicella. These 2.65 hectares of vines were planted in 1979 on a southeast-facing slope of well-draining, slightly alkaline, stony limestone-calcareous soils. The heat of the 2015 vintage lends a ripeness and generosity, and fortuitous cooling rains in August facilitated sufficient phenolic ripening.

The Corvina grapes were harvested at the end of September, destemmed, crushed and macerated for 12-15 days with daily pumping over. The must was fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature between 22°C and 31°C, followed by spontaneous malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged for 20 months in new French oak barriques, followed by a further 8 months in comparatively neutral large Slavonian oak casks. After bottling, the finished wine is cellared for 10 months before release.

After more than four years ageing, the wine is still extraordinarily fresh and crisp with a full spectrum of aromas, ranging from blackcurrant and cherry, to liquorice, vanilla and smoky tobacco notes, which develop on the palate. Full bodied and elegant, framed by taut tannins, the wine has a long, lingering finish.
