Anchor Steam Beer 35.5cl

The original, iconic Steam Beer from San Francisco's Anchor Brewing Company - distinctly malty, rustic and subtly spicy.

The Steam beer, or California common as the syle is otherwise known, has the mash bill of a malty pale ale, but the wort is fermented by lager yeast at higher than normal temperatures, around 18-19 °C. This unusual fermentation profile lends the beer a complex fruity character.

The name Steam Beer derives from the 19th Century San Francisco brewing habit of cooling then fermenting wort on the upper floor of the brewery in wide, shallow, open topped vessels, not unlike a Belgian koelschip. When hot wort was transferred to these vessels, steam could be seen billowing out of the brewery as the wort was cooled by the marine breeze.
