Barbeito Malvasia Reserva Madeira

Rich, complex and aromatic, with notes of candied almonds, dates, treacle, a sweet florality and the orange peel in marmade - This is a great match for ginger cake or parkin, and a beautiful contrasting pairing for manchego or aged parmesan.

This Madeira wine is made from 100% Malvasia harvested from vineyards in Arco de São Jorge. The fruit is pressed in a pneumatic press and the must is fermented partially, with grape spirit added to arrest fermentation when the sugar concentration is still at around 100g/L.

The resulting sweet fortified wine is then aged in a canteiro system, whereby the wine is aged in casks (French oak in this case) which are initially stored in the warm attic of the winery's warehouse, or 'Madeira Lodge', at temperatures that can exceed 40°C. As ageing progresses, these casks are moved down to progressively lower and cooler floors of the lodge, where the maturation process is more delicate by comparison.

This Malvasia Reserva was aged by this method for over 5 years.

Notes of toasted almonds, honey and a bit of smoke. Slightly caramelized on the palate, fresh and polished.
