Birichino Scylla 2019

Fresh, fruity and perfumed, with sharp yet ripe red fruit and the hint of rose petals, framed by gentle structural tannins - a delightful pairing for eastern mediterranean cuisine.

Founded in 2008 by veteran winemakers Alex Krause and John Locke, Birichino, of Santa Cruz, California, source fruit from some of the finest vineyards in the region - many planted in the 19th and early 20th century. These vineyards tend to be family-owned and mostly occupy cooler marine-influenced microclimates.

Scylla is a blend Grenache (15%) and Mouvèdre (7%), both from over 100 year old vines, and Carignan (78%) from two vineyards near the town of Lodi, planted in ca. 1920. The fruit is vinified in a rustic fashion - the grapes are fermented, some on stems, by wild yeast. The wine is then pressed into old, relatively inert oak barrels for ageing. The finished wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
