Bruichladdich Bere Barley 2012

Bere barley is the UK's oldest heritage barley strain, believed to have been cultivated for millenia. It is a robust strain, adapted to poor soil conditions and the wind and rain of northern Scotland and the Outer Hebrides.

The 20th century's emphasis on efficiency and profitability led to the near exctinction of this remarkable grain, however since 2005 Bruichladdich have been in collabration with The Highlands and Island Agronomy Institute to reintroduce it for the purposes of whisky distilling.

This whisky is the result. All of the barley that goes into making Bruichladdich's whisky is grown in Scotland, but with their limited edition releases, the source becomes much more specific. For this release, the barley was sourced from the Orkney Islands - specifically the 2011 harvest from Quoyberstane, Muddisdale, Weyland and Watersfield farms on St Ola, and Westermill farm on Burray. The spirit was distilled in 2012 and aged for 10 years in ex-bourbon casks prior to bottling without chill-filtration or the addition of spirit caramel.
