Charles Heidsieck Brut Millesime 2012

A chaotic vintage which nevertheless yielded grapes of exquisite quality. Sharp and fresh, with generous undertones of ripe stonefruit and toasted spice.

This vintage cuvée is composed of a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from 10 Grand and Premier crus - Oger, Vertus, Couilly, Cuis, Verzy, Aÿ, Ludes, Ambonnay, Tauxières and Avenay. Champagne in 2012 saw heavy rains, hail and cold snaps in the spring, followed by a heat wave. This caused reduced yields in the region, however a more moderate, warm summer produced grapes with particularly concentrated phenols and sugar levels.

The grapes from this vintage, after a rigorous selection process, were fermented seperately in stainless steel tanks then underwent malolactic fermentation. The varieties were blended, then bottled and tiraged for between 7 and 8 years of ageing on lees in bottle. The wine was disgorged and aged for a further 6 months at the winery before release.

This Brut champagne has 9.7g/L of residual sugar, balanced by 7.3g/L of acidity.

Official Tasting Notes
Golden in appearance. Initially, the nose shows subtle toasted and smoked notes with a touch of liquorice alongside fruity notes of apricot, blackthorn, quince and fresh almonds. The palate is mineral and taut with excellent freshness, with notes of quince, vanilla and peaches on the mid-palate, followed by a crisp finish. A lovely vintage which will continue to develop great complexity and generosity over time.
