Charles Heidsieck Rose Millesime 2008

A very good vintage for Champagne, and a relief after the difficult years that preceded it. Fresh, elegant and luxurious, with rich citrus, red berries and a hint of smoke.

Champagne in 2008 saw a dry Autumn, a mild winter and only sporadic rains in Spring. An unseasonably cold June threatened to disrupt floraison, however this was followed by a warm late summer which led to healthy vines and ripe grapes come harvest time.  

This vintage rosé is composed of 63% Pinot Noir and 37% Chardonnay from 10 Grand and Premier Cru vineyards. The Chardonnay from Oger, Cuis, Chouilly and Vertus, and the Pinot Noir from Avenay, Tauxières, Ambonnay, Verzy, Aÿ and Les Riceys.

The varieties were vinified seperately, with fermentation in stainless steel tanks followed by malolactic fermentation. The base wines, including an 8% proportion of red Pinot Noir, were blended, then bottled and tiraged. The blend was aged in bottle on lees for a period then disgorged. After the addition of the dosage, the wine was further aged at the winery until release in May of 2022.

This Brut Rosé has a residual sugar content of 7g/L.

Official Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2008 rosé is an elegant, soft pink with a delicate bubble. The initial nose is saline and mineral, underlined by hints of toast and smoke, but soon opens to express luxurious notes of pink grapefruit, blood orange, redcurrants and Morello cherries. The palate is creamy and complex, with notes of liquorice and blackberry tea, underpinned by a great freshness and structure. This vivacious wine has a long-lasting, aromatic finish, with extremely delicate effervescence at the very end.
