Iona Chardonnay 2022

Concentrated, complex and elegant with plentiful fresh citrus and a rounded nuttiness - A perfect pairing for crab and lobster.

The cool, Atlantic climate of Elgin, Western Cape is almost singularly well suited in South Africa to producing fresh, complex wines.

This Chardonnay comes from the 17 year old vines of two north-facing vineyards on the western edge of the Iona estate. This terroir allows for a long, slow period of physiological ripening. The grapes are pressed as whole bunches and each block is vinified seperately. After a 24 hour stabilisation period, the juice is transferred to 300L Frenh oak barrels (28% new) to ferment, with 5% of the batch undergoing spontaneous malolactic fermentation. The wine remains in these barrels for 11 months of ageing before blending and a further 3 months in tank before bottling.

Official Tasting Notes
The wine shows concentrated marzipan and citrus notes, with underlying hazelnut and lime notes, which adds to layered complexity. The wine is seamless, with flavoursome and long finish.
