Iona Kloof Chardonnay 2020

Terroir-driven, pure and precise.

A cool-climate Chardonnay made exclusively from fruit from the Kloof vineyard in Elgin, Western Cape. The vineyard is situated on a north-facing slope with silica quartz and clay soils and these vines were planted in 2009.

The fruit is picked by hand and whole bunch pressed before being wild fermented in 300L French oak barrels (38% new), with 7% of the batch undergoing malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged on lees for 12 months without battonage, before blending and a further 3 month stabilisation period prior to bottling.

Official Tasting Notes
The wine from the Kloof Vineyard is totally unique to South Africa. Pure fruit (soft white pear and bright limey citrus) razor sharp acidity and well-judged oak result in a wine that is precise, intricate yet layered, focussed and fine with significant ageing potential. It has a beautiful oyster shell minerality, a slight saline note, a long finish and good weight on the back palate.
