Iona Kloof Pinot Noir 2018

Ripe and robust yet elegant with an austere, sharp acidity and chalky tannins - Pairs beautifully with poultry and would even stand up to fattier cuts of pork such as the neck or belly.

Pinot Noir from the cool climate Kloof vineyard in Elgin, Western Cape, planted in 2009 on a north-facing slope in clay-based silica quartz soil.

The fruit is harvested and the bunches sorted by hand. The majority is destemmed, retaining 5% as whole bunches, before gentle pressing and 5-7 days of cold-maceration. The must is fermented by native yeast in open-top fermentation vessels with gentle punching down and pumping over twice daily. The wine is aged for 12 months in 300L and 500L French oak casks (37% new) on lees with malolactic fermentation. The wine is racked to a stainless steel vessel for 2 months of stabilisation and clarification prior to bottling.

The Kloof Vineyard is dry land farmed and produces wine that is totally unique to South Africa. It has an inviting pretty, floral, perfumed nose with an abundance of pure red fruits that include cherries, raspberries and strawberries. The palate is soft, gentle and alluring, intricate yet layered, with fine powdery chalky tannins and lively acidity – perfectly balanced. The wine is exciting with good intensity and texture, and has significant ageing potential.
