Iona Solace Syrah 2020

Packed with red berries, aromatic spice and white pepper, with floral undertones. Neither Rhone nor New World in style but something else - This delightful expression of Brocha vineyard terroir would pair beautifully with a venison and blue cheese ragu.

For Iona's proprietors, Andrew and Rozy Gunn, the Brocha vineyard in Elgin has been a long-term passion project. The site is arid, windy and inhospitable, with stony, sandy white quartz soils. Planted on this site in 2001, it was not until 2014 that they felt their Solace Syrah was finally ready to release for the first time.

The vineyard is farmed largely biodynamically and as ever Iona's approach to winemaking remains hands-off. Once ripe, the Syrah is picked and sorted by hand, destemmed and crushed. The must is fermented by native yeasts in open-top fermentation vessels with 21 days of skin contact and the cap punched down twice daily. The wine is aged in old 500L French oak casks for 14 months before bottling without fining or filtration.

Braised lamb and blue cheese, pecorino with rosemary and sundried tomato gremolada.

Official Tasting Notes
Red berry fruit, full of spice, white pepper and floral notes. Supple, intense palate with fine tannin matched by plenty of fruit.
