Krohn Vintage 2003

Rich, concentrated and structured. The 2003 vintage has a relatively low acidity, with its firm tannins providing structure. Intense dark plum and black cherry with sweet liquorice and vanilla.

Founded in 1865 by Theodor Weise and Dankort Krohn, Krohn has an established reputation for quality and their wines represent extraordinarily good value. For all of their ports, Krohn uses only grapes from A-grade vineyards around the Douro valley which are taken to their Quinta do Retiro Novo estate in Sarzedinho for vinification.

Vintage port is produced only from exceptional vintages. This determination of quality is made first by the individual producers, who then submit samples of their wine to the Institute of Port and Douro Wines (IVDP). The IVDP make the final judgement on whether the wine in question may bear the desgnation of Vintage Port.

This Vintage port is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca, all harvested in 2003. The fruit is trodden by foot and fermented in open granite lagares. Before the wine has fermented to dryness, grape spirit is added to halt fermentation and preserve some residual sugar. The fortified wine is then aged for up to 2 years in 547L Port Pipes and larger casks, before bottling. These bottles are held at the winery for several years, until they are judged to be ready for release.

Official Tasting Notes
Retaining a deep and youthful colour, the nose has intense black fruit characters, with notes of sweet spices, liquorice and vanilla. The palate has structure and concentration, with rich, ripe plum and cherry flavours, more spice and firm tannins. It is drinking well now, but still has many years ahead.
