Loveblock Pinot Noir 2021

Vibrant, well-structured and intense. The front palate is inundated with sherbety, sour red cherries and plums, which develops a savoury undertone of tobacco and mushrooms it progresses towards a long, zesty finish - though light-bodied, this Pinot is intense enough to stand up to roast lamb and game dishes.

Kim and Erica Crawford founded Loveblock wines in 2008 following the sale of the winery and brand that bears Kim's name. By comparison to the large commercial scale of Kim Crawford wines, Loveblock is very much a passion project for the couple, who now grow fruit on two sites in Marlborough and Central Otago.

This Pinot Noir was predominantly (90%) grown at the Crawford's own "Someone's Darling" vineyard near Bendigo in Central Otago. This particularly warm site is dedicated exclusively Pinot Noir, but several different clones thereof, planted in well-draining sandy loam soils over schist gravel. Local legend has it that the body of an unidentified young man was buried on the site in the 1860s, in a grave marked only with a wooden cross with the enscription, "Someone's Darling". The rest of the fruit was grown on Loveblock farm in Marlborough.

Once optimally ripe, the fruit was harvested and destemmed, in the cool early hours of the morning, then transported to the winery. The grapes were transferred directly into tanks, crushed only by their own weight and leaving some whole berries. After 5 days of cold maceration, the must was warmed to 20°C, allowing fermentation to begin spontaneously and proceed, with twice daily punching down, until dry. Following full malolactic fermentation in tank, half of the wine was aged for 8 months in neutral oak casks before assemblage and bottling.
