Niepoort Vintage 2005

An intense and brooding vintage that has matured beautifully over the years. Firm, dusty tannins and a freshening acidity frame notes of ripe damson, plum, liquorice and a slightly savoury smoky character to the finish - This is crying out for some ripe and tangy Gorgonzola!

2005 in the Douro Valley was hot and humid. Yields were high, but the grapes small with concentrated flavours and tannins at the time they were harvested in September-October.

This port is blended from fortified wines made from Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão and Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo). The grapes were hand-picked from vines with an average age of 60 years (plus some over 100 years old) in the schist soils of Pinhão, Ferrão and Vinha da Pisca.

The fruit was trodden by foot and fermented in wide, shallow Lagares, before pressing and fortifying the wine with grape spirit. Each fortified wine was aged for 2 years in casks before blending and bottling in 2007.

Official Tasting Notes
Fine, elegant, mineral but not balsamic, the floral and fruity character are enhanced. The taste continues fine, although it's a tannic wine. Rich but not excessive and with a long spicy aftertaste. Impressive finesse even though robust.
