Port of Leith Tawny Port

An excellent tawny port from Martha's Family Estate in the Baixo Corgo area of the Douro Valley. After fortification, this reserve tawny port is aged for between 6 and 8 years in oak casks. The resulting port is rich, nutty and fruity.

Bottled by the Port of Leith Distillery, highlighting a historic relationship that played a major part in scotch whisky history. In the 18th and 19th century, casks of sherry and port would be delivered to Leith by ship. The fortified wines would be bottled and sold by the many fine wine merchants in Scotland, and the casks would be used by the whisky industry to age their fine whiskies, imbuing lovely flavour and colour.

Now, these wines are bottled at source, and the casks are delivered seperately to the distilleries. It is very rare to be able to try the sherry or port that has seasoned a cask. The Port of Leith Distillery want to mature their whisky in casks they have sourced from the best producers, and to show that these wines are of excellent quality, they are bottling the wine too which is something a bit unusual. You can have a few bottles of this to tide you over until their whisky is released in the next few years.
