Spain’s first DO (Denominación de Origen) was granted to Rioja as far back as 1925, and the region was also the first to be awarded the top tier DOC (Denominación de Origen Calificada) status in 1991. Accounting for almost 40% of Spain’s wine production by volume, and almost 50% by value, it has been the source of the greatest number of Spain’s finest wines for much of the last century - there’s no denying that Rioja is one of the wine world’s most successful regions, so on the surface it would seem like it needs very little introduction.

Nevertheless, changes have been brewing for some time – in the early part of the 21st century, the gap between the top producers and the majority of the region’s production widened, and much of the output became formulaic and homogenous. In essence, with quality sacrificed for volume, the region had become a victim of its own regulations, and its own success.

But Rioja is reborn: forward thinking producers with a focus on varietal and vineyard specificity have pushed for, and achieved changes to the classification system, which in turn has driven quality and innovation. As a result our shelves are heaving with world-class wines which speak of Rioja terroir rather than winemaking dogma, & we want to share them with you!
