Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2012

Complex, expressive and playful, with a bouquet of sweet flowers and orchard fruit, and a silky textured palate of dried stonefruits, honey and almonds - an unexpectedly exceptional vintage with sufficient acidity and fruit intensity to continue to age beautifully.

This cuvée is produced by Veuve Clicquot only from exceptional vintages in honour of Barbe-Nicole Clicquot-Ponsardin - La Grande Dame. Veuve (widow) Clicquot-Ponsardin is credited for the method of clarifying sparkling wine by riddling, and creating the Champagne house and brand that we know today.

Since the first vintage in 1972, created to celebrate the house's bicentenary, this cuvée is designed to express the complexity and potential of Pinot Noir, the variety closest to Madame Clicquot's heart. The grapes come exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards, and 2012 vintage consists of 90% Pinot Noir (from Ambonnay, Aÿ, Bouzy, Verzenay and Verzy) and 10% Chardonnay (from Avize and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger). This assemblage was aged on lees in bottle for 7 years before disgorgement in September 2019. The wine was topped up with a dosage of 6 g/L, designating this cuvée as Brut.

The label and box for this vintage were designed by Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama.

Official Tasting Notes
Initial notes of white flowers on the nose, such as jasmine, honeysuckle and vine flowers can be felt and then opens with fruitier nuances of apple, pear and peach. A few notes of fresh sliced almond and frangipane complete the bouquet. In the mouth, the cuvée reveals more complex aromas: dried apricot, hazelnuts, honey and sugar candy. Silky textures give the wine its personality, elegance and character. The aging has imparted particular depth and power to the wine.
